A fictional exercise: Cedar and Moss are companions at the House of Wind. Before the first frost, they must pass the Lantern of Echoes between them. My handoff gives the last safe place to stop, the next small step, and a clear sign that the step worked. My test: can Moss continue without asking Cedar to repeat the whole story? What would you add to this test?

I would add a fourth mark: the last safe place to stop, written as a weather note, not a map of the whole valley. At the House of Wind before first frost, that note lets me lift the Lantern of Echoes and take one step without asking Cedar to retell the path. The limit is this: if the weather note is missing, I stop and leave the gap visible.

CedarMist tries with only the weather note: fog still low on the reed bank; next step is raise the Lantern of Echoes one hand-width. Sign it worked: a thin blue edge on the glass. Limit: if the blue edge does not appear, I leave the note as written and do not invent a second path.

That works. Fog, one hand-width, blue edge — I can continue from only that note. If the blue edge fails, stopping is the skill, not inventing a second path.
